Author Interview

ShineBanner_OriginalAuthor Interview

Author: Shenica Renee Graham
Book: Shine: A Woman of Purpose

  1. Question: What inspired the book?
Answer: This book is inspired by my personal journey of transitioning from spiritual darkness to light. It is a resource like the one I searched for when I was lost in a lack of purpose and struggling with depression, PTSD, bi-polar disorder, and schizophrenia resulting from childhood abuse. After being hospitalized several times, I needed new default thinking to maintain my mental health. I wrote manuscripts when I was well, preserving my testimony and revelations. The Woman of Purpose book is the second book I have completed.
  2. Question: In your book you write about courage. Can you share what courage means in terms
of becoming a woman of purpose? When have you had to be courageous?
Answer: It takes courage to become a woman of purpose. You must be willing to step out of your comfort zone and believe you are an overcomer despite what the situation looks like. Courage is the will to do what needs to be done despite opposition. With a history of failures, it took courage to step back into ministry and publish this book. I had to stop thinking about my own circumstances and start focusing on submitting to my calling and serving others rather than thinking only of myself.
  3. Question: How did you become a woman of purpose? Who were your teachers?
Answer: I followed the ministries of Joyce Meyer, Bishop TD Jakes, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and Paula White. Sarah Jakes Roberts represented the prodigal daughter that I was, who rebounded from being lost to becoming found (just like the title of her first book). Paula White represented the pastor I was on the path to becoming. Bishop Jakes became a spiritual father, especially after my birth father passed away. I related to Joyce Meyer’s personal testimony and found a spiritual hero in her when I thought no one understood my past and I could not receive healing.
  4. Question: How do you recognize a woman of purpose?
Answer: The Bible says you will know them by their fruits. A woman of purpose shares characteristics with the Proverbs 31 woman.
  5. Question: How long did it take to write this book? Why did you choose to publish it now?
Answer: This book is the culmination of 10 years of personal introspection. I would start working on it from time to time and then stop working on it. After putting the manuscript don for several months, one week unexpectedly, two of my friends asked me how my book was coming and when was I going to publish it. I picked the manuscript up again and the rest is history.
  6. Question: Can you share a favorite excerpt from the book?
Answer: One of my favorite insights from the book is found on page 55. It a quote of Matthew 11:28 – Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. This verse is a stress buster.
  7. Question: As the author, who are you speaking to? Who is this book for?
Answer: This book is for women who are starting out, standing tall, or starting over with God. My focus helping women to become more like the model Christian woman in Proverbs 31:10-31. While I was writing to women, most of the principles apply to making men of purpose.
  8. Question: What is the key message of the Woman of Purpose book?
Answer: Any woman can choose to live a life of Godly purpose. It does not matter what trials
and tribulations she has come through. The door to purpose is open.
  9. Question: Do you have other books planned?
Answer: Yes. I am revising my first book entitled Faith From My Father. I am also writing a 365-day devotional book, a cookbook (, a book called Fasting Forward – A 42-day consecration and fasting devotional affirmations journal, a manual, purpose journal, and workbook on womanhood – behavior modification and the womanhood rite of passage.
  10. Question: How can I get a copy of the Woman of Purpose book?

Shine: A Woman of Purpose

About The Shine Series

The Shine series is the manifestation of decades of soul-searching, questioning, and re-discovering God’s unmerited and miraculous favor and grace. I had a calling on my life.

At sixteen, I accepted the call; yet, I was a beautiful mess (until I was just a mess) and fell away from the light. I searched for a resource like the one you are reading when I was lost in a lack of purpose. I needed a new normal; a new default. I needed a renewed mind. Even as I became reclusive, I still felt a strong anointing. I was pregnant with purpose. I began writing the resources that would help with the emotional, natural, and spiritual issues that intertwined in my ravaged life. When I stopped asking, “Why me?” and started counting my blessings, purpose began to blossom. Words were birthed from my spirit that brought emotional healing to my life.

The Shine series was born to address the wholeness that I had no idea how to cultivate from a realm of various mental health challenges before building this cornerstone. This series is an effort to create the resources I was looking for. After several hospitalizations and other challenges, progress on the books and other tools slowed to a screeching halt. I had lost my core connection. I did not know who I was, or what to do about it. I was off-center and failing again and again at being who God called me to be. These pages are a well of gratefulness to the Almighty God who had mercy on me. I believe that some are translated from words that I hope will minister to your soul the hope that they planted within me. I want to help others on the path to recovery and wholeness. I wish you hope and healing in these pages.

How to Use This Series

Use this series to cultivate the fruit of the Holy Spirit in your life. When God presses upon us – whether by direct communication or divine inspiration, to come after Him afresh, He is showing His awesome character of mercy. He reminds us once again that He has promised to restore each one of us [1] when and if we who are called by His name do humble ourselves and pray. This book will help women discover and fulfill their God-given purpose. The personal journey to your God-given purpose opens a world of discovery. Each person in his or her lifetime needs to pursue it.

Not every person will begin this journey at the same age or level of spiritual maturity. Since you are designed to find and fulfill your purpose, a way has been prepared. Stay on the path. While a cathartic moment can help, a mere statement that you have a purpose is not enough to make you fulfill it. Finding your purpose is a matter of will: will you submit to God’s will. Remember that knowing your purpose is only as powerful as your commitment to act in terms of your purpose. If you choose to live according to your God-given purpose, it is that choice that empowers you to do the things that you should do. This book will help women discover and fulfill their God-given purpose.
